dos palillos
Contract

Asia and Spain. Two different cultures that use sticks (chopsticks and toothpicks) to eat.

The orientals use them to pick up small portions of food. In Spanish bars the toothpick is the king of "tapas". Different in shape but similar in their use, they symbolize the itinerary between plate and mouth. Two utensils which are pure, basic, minimal in design and primitive yet modern at the same time.

A coincidence but also an excuse to bring two gastronomic cultures together: Asia and Spain.

A new concept that tries to unify Spanish "tapas" philosophy together with Asian tapas
gastronomy.

    The place

"Dos Palillos" is situated at nº 9 calle Elisabets, next to Hotel Casa Camper, in the Raval area in Barcelona.

"Dos Palillos" has an intentional provocative appearance which may even cause confusion. It is divided into two different and contrasting spaces: a vulgar bar which can be found on any street corner in the city through which you have access to a more refined Asian bar, where you can eat sitting down, in front of (almost inside) the kitchen and be served by the chefs themselves.

A vulgar bar?

Did this bar already exist? This question will always remain unanswered. Analysing the historical photos that hang on the walls we might even find images of the bar's inauguration and a press release appearance that warns proprietors of the risk involved when aspiring to an award for their "interior design".

The disgraceful mix of materials, the wrong use of bulbs, elements that cause a degree of chaos in the bar, adjusting the stools to an impossible height are some of the things that create a feel of everything but design that is so necessary in Barcelona.

A small work of floral art hasn't been forgotten either as you walk into the bar, another example of where bad taste reaches incredible heights.

You could say that this small space is dedicated to the thousands of millions of bars across the country where the proprietor has also taken on the role of decorator, interior designer and architect.

It doesn't intend to be a kitsch bar and it's possibly closer to being a vulgar bar.

A sophisticated Asian bar

The perfect interior designer handbook for this kind of establishment recommends not to abuse the use of too many materials, explains that the light should be a warm tone, that the preferred colour should be red and if putting up curtains they should be kept short.

The "japo" bar by "Dos Palillos" tries to give a Japonese touch.

The perfect chef handbook for this kind of establishment recommends extreme order, cleanliness and Mise en place. The chef must be a perfecctionist in cooking, refined with presentations and respectful towards customers.

Albert Raurich who spent many years in the kitchen at elBulli, prooved that in order to satisfy his 25 customers the handbook was easily fulfilled.
