Construction began in 1913 and ended in 1916 under the supervision of the architect Alfonso Dubé y Díez. Inspired by other European markets made of wrought-iron and styles that follow the Halles de Paris. Its commercial activity starts way before this time and was once the centerpiece of the neighborhood, providing food produce in the open air in wooden boxes and stalls. It was around 1847 when there were around 88 stalls and 128 boxes.

In the second part of the 19th century safety and hygene issues were brought up by town planners, doctors and scientists who tried to solve sanitary and health problems found in street markets.

The San Miguel market opened on 13 May 1916. Its wrought-iron column structure, roof construction, drainage system and ceramic crests that crown the roof are the main characteristics of the building. The project cost 300.000 pesetas (1.800 Euros). The glass windows came later on. San Miguel is the only iron built building left in the city, as all the other bulidings that were built towards the end of the 19th century were demolished and, in general, substituted with new constructions.

Quality, freshness and seasonal produce is what you will find at the market which, responds to recent Gastronomical interest and which has turned into a real culture. The San Miguel market intends to become a Culinary Culture Center where the product takes the leading role and where all gastronomical events and happenings occur. It is meeting point for customers, professionals, gourmands and a place for those who need information or advice. A place where you can do your everyday shopping but also participate in activities, taste what you are taking home with you or simply buy the necessary utensils for cooking at our kitchen equipment stall.

What's Vinçon doing at a market?

The San Miguel market has always been a place that has caught our attention for its architectural quality. When this project was presented, we were interested in opening a crockery shop, we think it's vital to accompany the best food with the best kitchen utensils. There is about 20m2 of floor space where you will find all you need for cooking. All these products and much more are available in Vinçon Madrid.
